AI INNOVATION LAB

Laying the groundwork for incorporating artificial intelligence into the work of teaching and learning is complex, and oftentimes overwhelming. This model is designed to provide guidance that is research-based, human-centered, and sustainable in the midst of this once-in-a-lifetime disruption of the future of human learning.

In a world of change, the learners shall inherit the earth, while the learned shall find themselves perfectly suited for a world that no longer exists.
— Eric Hoffer

This is not about using a new tool…

AI is not merely the latest EdTech solution. It is not the sought after silver bullet. It is in fact not a tool at all, but a form of technology that will generate, animate, and integrate in the future into virtually every tool we can imagine.

The importance of this distinction — a technology not a tool — cannot be overstated. A failure to understand this distinction virtually guarantees that all of the benefits to be harnessed will be either underutilized or ignored altogether.

What we are really talking about here is a challenge that centers around the adoption and use of technology more broadly.

  • To provide equity of access and proficiency across your organization

  • To provide tailored professional development and skill-building for people at all levels of interest and experience with AI.

  • To leverage well-documented research and best practice to cultivate and sustain effective technology adoption and implementation.

  • To create a universal fundamental literacy that enables your team to develop and pivot as advances in the technology and tools continue.

  • To create a self-reinforcing culture of support and innovation around AI.

  • To deploy AI in ways that are explicitly human-centered and strategic.

  • It is important that decision-makers, stakeholders, and participants understand why this lab is structured in a very intentional way. Transparency increases trust, enhances engagement, and provides learning that can be applied across contexts. You will especially be able to see how this mode leverages the Unified Theory of the Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT2) model, which has extensive research and application, particularly in educational contexts.

  • Drawing on that research base, an original self-scoring assessment is available to help you place members of your team in the relevant cohorts and and content cycles. Take all of the guesswork out of where to begin through this clear and actionable tool.

  • Every organization’s needs and resources are different. This model offers an overarching framework for cultivating and implementing a foundational literacy and proficiency in AI across your organization. It is designed in such a way that you can build your own professional development and training or know concretely what you will be seeking from external partners. The goal here is maximum flexibility that enables you to know wha you need and allow you to pursue it within the unique operations and constraints of your organization.

  • The people across your organization all start at their unique level of interest and readiness. The AI Innovation Lab is designed to meet each group where they are and bring them to a shared future level of skill, proficiency, and implementation. This design is included so that it only needs to be implemented.

  • Teams and organizations who leverage the AI Innovation Lab model will have ongoing access to an emerging suite of resources, research, and best practice. This is an important value-add in a space where the speed of innovation and development is so rapid and dynamic.
